3rd Year: Far Rockaway Community Centre
The Rockaway Community Center Project is about designing a sports hub for the community that can also be used as an emergency shelter if needed.
This area is a flood zone and may require a place of refuge in the future. The architecture is aimed at creating a safe space that can withstand floods, using materials that are durable and resistant to water damage. Additionally, the design incorporates pathways that provide access to the shelter from higher-lying areas in case of flooding, ensuring that people can reach the shelter safely.
Site Analysis
The beach in the vicinity has newly built service units (medical aid, offices, security and bathrooms). My partner and I chose to study the construction of this beach unit which is designed in a particular style and with specific materials to withstand the floods. This study set precedent for how we need to design and build our project.
Our site is situated between a main road and a high-lying railway station. We decided to connect our building to the railroad so that people can come into the building directly from the station and it can serve as a high entrance in case of floods.

Structural Drawings
The parts of the building housing circulation, such as ramps, fire stairs, and elevators, incorporate a varied structural system known as trusses. (highlighted red in B - 4. 01)
